Charlie was raised in the vertical concrete landscape of NYC before making an exit to the University of Montana with an Earth and environmental sciences degree. As vagabond alpinist, he climbed in Yosemite, western United States, British Columbia, Canadian Rockies, and the French Alps. While working in Alaska in the summer, he spent 5 seasons exploring the backcountry in the Wasatch Mountains, all on skinny skis. He left his job and skiing for a Caltech PhD and moved to Washington as a professor at CWU, focusing on earthquake studies in the Tien Shan and SE Asia. At CWU, he taught snow science classes and worked as professional ski patroller at Snoqualmie Pass. While living in Asia for six year, as the founding Chair of the Asian School of the Environment, Singapore, he guided and trained scuba divers in remote atolls of Indonesia. After returning to the Pacific NW, he has rediscovered ski touring at Snoqualmie Pass. He is professional member of the American Avalanche Association and is an AIARE Course Leader. Charlie shares his passion for snow with his wife and splits his time between Seattle, Ellensburg, and Rossland, British Columbia.
